Launch of the eighth season of the Segal Centre Power Jazz Series

A rare opportunity to see six-time Grammy nominated American vocalist Tierney Sutton perform her Grammy nominated jazz tribute to one of Canada’s most beloved singer-songwriters, Joni Mitchell.

Montreal, September 2015 – On October 25th, 2015 Six-time Grammy nominated Jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton will perform a jazz inspired re-imagining of the legacy of Joni Mitchell at the Segal Center. As both a recording artist and arranger, Tierney Sutton is often described as “a singer’s singer,” but just as often, she is described as a “musician’s singer” who uses her voice like an instrument. Most recently, Tierney received her 5th consecutive Grammy Nomination for “Best Jazz Vocal Album” for her latest project, “After Blue,” an intimate, jazz-inspired re-imagining of the legacy of Joni Mitchell. The album, which is Sutton’s first solo outing without her longtime Band, features Al Jarreau, Hubert Laws, Peter Erskine, Larry Goldings, Serge Merlaud, Kevin Axt and The Turtle Island Quartet.

Spanning over 20 years of collaboration, the Tierney Sutton Band’s 9 CDs have consistently topped the US jazz charts, leading to Tierney’s selection as Jazz week’s Vocalist of the Year as well as to numerous other accolades in the music world including a 2011 Grammy nomination for the Band’s collaborative arranging. She has headlined in recent years at The Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and Jazz At Lincoln Center.

2015-2016 Power Jazz Series: 5 incredible shows!
In 2015-2016 the Segal Centre’s flagship musical series celebrates its 8th season with five incredible acts to delight lovers of jazz and beyond. Beginning with the all-star TIERNEY SUTTON this always-inspiring music series is also presenting:

JASON ROSENBLATT | December 6, 2015
Composer, pianist, vocalist and harmonica player Jason Rosenblatt is one of the world’s foremost harmonica innovators. His performance on the unassuming instrument has helped to open new musical ground for the instrument long associated with “the blues,” into art forms as diverse as jazz, bluegrass, klezmer and Turkish music. Combining mellifluous, mind bending harmonica and gritty guitar, his quartet’s low-down blues inflected set is always performed with good humour.

LAILA BIALI | February 28, 2016
Juno nominated Canadian Jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter Laila Biali has toured with Suzanne Vega, Chris Botti and Paula Cole and recorded with and supported Sting. She takes the best of pop, rock and soul, informs it with her knowledge of Jazz and weaves it into her musical arrangements. Her accolades include « SOCAN Composer of the Year » and « Keyboardist of the Year » at Canada’s National Jazz Awards.

PIANO CHAMELIONS | April 17, 2016
John Roney & Matt Herskowitz
The Piano Chameleons offer a unique performance concept. Three of Montreal’s most talented pianists — Matt Herskowitz, John Roney and a guest artist — play on two grand pianos, improvising in a jazz style over well-known works from the classical repertoire. This musical genre is widely known as “Third Stream.” A rare opportunity to see virtuoso musicians do what they do best in a relaxed, intimate setting.

In association with the consulate general of Israel, the Segal Centre will soon announce a very special finale to the 2015-16 Power Jazz series. Stay tuned.
